Ivy Tech Alumna Kylin Brown Serves as Artist in Residency at the Imagination Lab

This February, Ivy Tech Indianapolis alumna Kylin Brown (Fine Arts graduate) had the privilege to serve two different weeks at the Plainfield Community School Corporation’s Imagination Lab as their Artist in Residency. The lab opened in 2018 and is a unique, high-tech learning facility for elementary school students, providing them with new opportunities to prepare them for the future.

The residency portion of the Imagination Lab is a new initiative that launched in January.

During her residency, Kylin worked on several projects, one being a Pipe Cleaner Sculpture and Artwork Installation. This project was a collaborative piece that she worked on with kindergarten and first-grade students.

Throughout her work, Kylin taught the children about lightweight sculpture and helped them develop their fine motor skills. She worked with the students to create what they called the “Imagination Cloud,” that’s currently on display at the Imagination Lab.

During her second week, Kylin spent time with third-grade students, teaching about watercolor washes. After her interactive discussions, she then allowed the students to mix colors and paint pieces of paper however they liked, encouraging them to cut or tear their colorful paper.

In doing this, the children learned the “destruction” part of the process of artwork – which they then glued the pieces onto a new background to put things together. Soon after, Kylin used a few of the watercolor scraps students left behind to create a collage, called “More Beautiful Together,”  that will stay at the Imagination Lab.
