Franklin Adjunct Judith Davis has been a part of the Ivy Tech Community College family since 1994. She began teaching at the Columbus campus and picked up classes at Ivy Tech Franklin when the location became a part of Columbus.
In all her years of teaching, her new virtual classroom may be the most unique experience she and her students have ever experienced.
“In addition to my work at Ivy Tech, I raise exhibition poultry and frequently have a chicken or two, or three… or four… who have been brought indoors to be treated for an infection or injury,” Judith explained. “My house is quite small, so there is no quiet room to which I can retreat.”
But it hasn’t stopped her from teaching and the students from learning!
“During our first sessions, two roosters chose to communicate vociferously,” she said.
In addition to her chickens, Judith also has four dogs that keep the varmints away, two house cats that occasionally like to jump on the keyboard and an African grey parrot that she hopes watches his language!
When Judith had to quickly re-arrange her house for a workstation, she moved a brooder tub of chicks off a table that she could use for her laptop and iPad. However, 30 minutes before her first online class was due to start, she realized her laptop’s power cord was broken! Luckily, she was easily able to shift things over to her iPad and the class went on without a hitch.
