Ivy Tech Indianapolis opens Center for Intercultural Excellence

Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis hosted a virtual interactive grand opening celebration of its Center for Intercultural Excellence on Tuesday, March 30, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

This new Center has been more than a year in the making, spearheaded by the College’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging. It will be managed by Student Cultural Advocates and offer an administrative office, support services, lounge, meeting area and artwork from Ivy Tech alums Kaila Austin and Gary Gee.

During the event, viewers took a virtual tour of the space, watched performances celebrating diversity, enjoyed a video featuring students, employees and community members and watched the dedication of the campus’ first Reflection Room.

“We are so pleased to be dedicating our quiet reflection area to Mr. Ural Smith Jr.,” said Dr. Kathleen Lee, chancellor of Ivy Tech Central Indiana. “Mr. Smith was a wonderful man who led by example in his own quiet way.  Indianapolis Ivy Tech was very fortunate to have him serve on our Campus Board of Trustees and as Chair of the board for many years. His grace and wisdom made a difference in my life.”

The Reflection Room will provide all a space for prayer, meditation, de-escalation, restorative justice and more.

In addition to watching the event, participants are invited to participate in a Community Art Project that will be displayed at the Center later this year. Those interested do not need any prior artwork experience and will be mailed instructions and materials. To participate, fill out the form at link.ivytech.edu/cie_community_project.

For more information or questions, download the event flyer, watch the FOX 59 coverage of the event, or contact Georgina Owens at gowens9@ivytech.edu. For assistance with the Community Art Project, contact Emily Watson at ewatson27@ivytech.edu.
