As Ivy Tech Community College celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023, Ivy Tech Indianapolis is looking back on significant moments of our past that have made our campus the most extensive and diverse in the entire Ivy Tech system. As we progress toward continued positive change and evolution, we must reflect on our past to understand where we’ve been and envision our future. So, here’s to the next 60 years of building more sufficient pathways to higher education for our community!
This month, 14 years ago, Ivy Tech Community College publicly announced its plans to expand the downtown Indianapolis campus and transform the former St. Vincent Hospital, located at Fall Creek Parkway, North Drive, and Illinois Street, into what we now know as the Illinois Fall Creek Center (IFC).
The enrollment numbers at Ivy Tech Indianapolis quadrupled between 1999 and 2009, according to the fall 2009 Ivy Tech Magazine, and that semester 22,000 students were enrolled.
As the state’s largest and fastest-growing community college campus at the time, it was in need of additional classrooms, lab space, and parking, and in 2006 Ivy Tech acquired the property from the City of Indianapolis.
In its 2009 renovation announcement, Ivy Tech shared with the public that it would build a new state-of-the-art building that would serve as both a classroom setting and a community gathering place, all while preserving the building’s historic facade.
Construction began in 2010 and finished in 2012, and Ivy Tech stuck to its promise. The new design and layout provide a more modern feel while keeping its historical presence. The IFC we all know and love houses digital signage, student lounges, a food court, a bookstore, computer labs, event space, community rooms, and last, but certainly not least, a World of Flags display.
